Diwali is a Hindu festival that is mostly celebrated in India. Nepal celebrates its own version of Diwali, called Tihar. Both Tihar and Diwali are festivals of light, and celebrate the triumph of good over evil. This year, Diwali and Tihar are celebrated from November 4th-November 9th.
During Diwali and Tihar, diyas, or small clay lamps, are lit to decorate homes, streets, and temples. Both festivals are also celebrated by creating intricate designs called Rangoli which are placed at the entrance of homes to welcome visitors. Both Diwali and Tihar also celebrate the goddess Lakshmi on the main day of the holiday.
